Nearby Beaufort (pronounced ''Bo-Fort") is the third-oldest town in North Carolina. This historic town has more than a hundred 18th-century Victorian homes, with some open for tours. The discovery of what is believed to be the wreck of Blackbeard's flagship in the waters near Beaufort only support the stories of the area's shady past.
The Beaufort Historical Tour is a walking tour of selected homes and gardens. This area is definitely geared to wholesome family fun. We found it to be just what we were looking for. Quiet and not congested at all during that time of year. During the winter, Atlantic Beach is very quiet and peaceful. The weather in November is usually in the mid 60's to 70's and clear.
There are more than 5,000 permanent residents on the Emerald Isle and most of the shopping areas and restaurants are open. Golf is less expensive and more available.
One spot that we would recommend is Harkers Island which is about a half hour drive northeast of Beaufort following Route 70. You will find the National Park Service headquarters for Cape Lookout; which is worth a visit. You can take ferries to Cape Lookout for about $15 per person, with a minimum of $55.00. Most ferries are closed in the winter but one (The Outer Banks Ferry Service) is open all year long. They take you out to the lighthouse on Cape Lookout and drop you off with a prearranged time to come back depending on how long you want to stay.
Due to the proximity of the Gulf stream, Atlantic Beach has warmer, clearer waters with visibility over 100 feet. We have large schools of pelagic fish, tropical fish, corals and wrecks too!
